A beautiful William VI sofa, made from handcarved mahogony turned legs on original brass casters. Beautiful facings, very good quality. The frame has been professionally restored by an expert in London, UK, as it was in a very poor condition when found. The piece has been fully re-upholstered, using traditional methods and techniques including webbed arms, stuffed with horse hair and upholstered back with buttons. There are no springs in this piece as springs were not invented until the Victoria era, there is a large single seat cushion instead. No foam was used in this restoration. The piece has been upholstered in a soft sage green fabric with pinpricked fleur de lys.  Presented in Good Condition. Complete with Bolster Cushions.

  • William IV antiques were made in a very narrow time period between 1830 and 1837, falling at the end of the Regency period and before the Victorian era.  Antique Regency style furniture was lighter in scale than earlier Rococo Georgian pieces and the Victorian Revival pieces that were to follow. The primary woods used were mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. These antiques have a number of unique characteristics which make them relatively easy to identify.

    • Carved motifs such as mythological creatures, trophies, lions, torches, laurel leaves and crowns.
    • Most of the legs were elaborately carved cabriole legs, often contained features such as spades, clubs and lion's paws carried over from the preceding Chippendale furniture.  The legs looked more like outward curving knees with an inward curving ankle.
    • Quality was a big factor in the construction of pieces made during this period so pieces were built to last.
